GLOSSARY

Price vs 200-Day Average

Technical Analysis

IN PLAIN ENGLISH

A quick read on the longer trend: above the 200-day average means the price is higher than it has been on average over the last several months; below means lower. It describes the past, not what happens next.

FULL DEFINITION

How far the current price is above or below its average closing price over the last 200 trading days.

EXAMPLE

Gold at $4,147.70 with a 200-day average of $4,541.66 is (4,147.70 ÷ 4,541.66 − 1) × 100 = −8.7% vs its 200-day average.

HOW IT'S CALCULATED

Gap = (price ÷ 200-day average − 1) × 100. The 200-day average is supplied by the market data provider (Yahoo Finance); the gap is worked out by the app. Both figures are in the same currency, so the exchange rate cancels out. Hidden when the provider sends no average. Stablecoins don't show it.
