GLOSSARY

Holding Yield

Holding Metrics

IN PLAIN ENGLISH

The income the stock currently pays relative to its market price. This is the yield anyone buying today would get — it is not based on your purchase price, so it does not change when your cost basis does. For your own yield on cost, see Annual Yield.

FULL DEFINITION

The holding's dividend yield at today's price: forward for shares, trailing twelve months for funds and ETFs.

EXAMPLE

A share trading at £40 whose current dividend comes to £2 a year shows a Holding Yield of 5.00%.

HOW IT'S CALCULATED

Built from the market data provider's figures rather than your ledger, × 100 and rounded to 2 decimal places. For a share it is the forward dividend yield (the current dividend rate annualised ÷ share price), the same figure as Div Yield (Fwd) in the stock's detail, so it looks ahead from today's rate. For a fund or ETF, which has no forward rate, it is the trailing twelve-month yield (the last year's distributions ÷ price), the same figure as Div Yield (TTM). The holdings table marks each one Fwd or TTM under the figure, and shows -- when the provider has no yield for the holding.
