IN PLAIN ENGLISH
The profit, after this year's losses, on shares you sold this tax year from a general account.
FULL DEFINITION
Gains minus losses on sales in one tax year outside ISAs and pensions, with each sale matched to purchases the way HMRC matches shares.
EXAMPLE
Sell 700 shares on 10 June and buy 200 back on 25 June: those 200 are matched to the rebuy (the 30-day rule) and the other 500 to the average cost of the shares you already held.
HOW IT'S CALCULATED
Each sale from a general account, or from a lot with no account set, is matched to purchases in HMRC's order: shares bought the same day, then shares bought in the 30 days after the sale (earliest first), then the pool of every other share bought before it, at its average cost. Gain = proceeds − the matched cost, both in pounds, using each trade's amount at the exchange rate on its own date where the app recorded one. Net gains = the year's gains − the year's losses. Lots in an ISA or pension never enter the matching. Shares sold with no purchase on record to match are left out and named on the widget. That's why it differs from Realised Gains, which covers all time and uses one average cost.
