GLOSSARY

Taxable Dividends

Tax Year

IN PLAIN ENGLISH

The dividends that count towards your dividend allowance and dividend tax for the year.

FULL DEFINITION

Dividends paid to you in the tax year on shares held outside ISAs and pensions.

EXAMPLE

A London dividend going ex on 20 March is placed about 30 days later, on 19 April, so it counts in the tax year that starts on 6 April.

HOW IT'S CALCULATED

Each recorded dividend is dated by its ex-dividend date, so it's placed at an estimated payment date: about 30 days later for London listings, 15 for US ones, and on the ex-date elsewhere. It counts in the tax year (6 April to 5 April) that date falls in, once the date has passed. It's split by the accounts its shares sat in the day before the ex-date: the part in an ISA or pension is left out, the part in a general account or with no account set counts. Amounts are converted into pounds at today's rate, and US dividends are counted before the US tax withheld. For this tax year, Received + expected adds what the Estimated Dividends forecast still has for the months to the end of March, less anything already paid this month, split by the accounts your shares are in today.
