IN PLAIN ENGLISH
A quick read on the shorter-term trend: above the 50-day average means the price is higher than it has been on average over the last couple of months; below means lower. It describes the past, not what happens next.
FULL DEFINITION
How far the current price is above or below its average closing price over the last 50 trading days.
EXAMPLE
Gold at $4,000 with a 50-day average of $3,800 is (4,000 ÷ 3,800 − 1) × 100 = +5.3% vs its 50-day average.
HOW IT'S CALCULATED
Gap = (price ÷ 50-day average − 1) × 100. The 50-day average is supplied by the market data provider (Yahoo Finance); the gap is worked out by the app. Both figures are in the same currency, so the exchange rate cancels out. Hidden when the provider sends no average.
