IN PLAIN ENGLISH
Instead of typing what an exchange balance is worth in pounds and updating it, say which coin and how many — the value then follows the market.
FULL DEFINITION
The value of a crypto balance you entered with its coin and how many you hold, at the coin's current price.
EXAMPLE
0.5 bitcoin at $60,000 with a USD→GBP rate of 0.80: 0.5 × 60,000 × 0.80 = £24,000.
HOW IT'S CALCULATED
Value = quantity × the coin's price in US dollars (CoinGecko, reused for up to five minutes) × the latest stored daily USD→currency rate. The coin is named by its CoinGecko id, the last part of its address on coingecko.com (bitcoin, ethereum). Until a price arrives — or if CoinGecko doesn't list the id, or can't be asked, or there's no rate for your currency — the row keeps the value it was last saved with and says it isn't priced yet; it is never guessed from another price. It is a market price for the coin, not what an exchange would pay after fees or a spread. Wallets you watch by address are valued separately (see Crypto Wallet Value).
