GLOSSARY

Typed-in Dates

Portfolio Metrics

IN PLAIN ENGLISH

So the dates that matter on the things you hold by hand turn up in your calendar next to dividends and earnings.

FULL DEFINITION

The dates you entered on the Portfolio page — a bond's coupons and maturity, when a cash rate or fixed term ends, when a loan is paid off or a fixed rate runs out, when money owed is due — shown in your calendar.

EXAMPLE

A gilt maturing on 12 June 2031 that pays twice a year has coupons on 12 June and 12 December each year, and the principal on 12 June 2031.

HOW IT'S CALCULATED

A bond's coupon dates are the day of the month it matures, in its coupon months: the maturity month, then every 6 months (twice a year), every 3 months (four times a year) or just that month (once a year). A bond with no maturity date has no coupon dates. Only dates still to come, within about 13 months, are listed — a date that has passed is history. Nothing is looked up: they are only the dates you entered.
